ECHOSMAP PROJECT Institutions
The ECHOSMAP project aims to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Lagoon of Venice from its origin (about 6000 years ago) up to present. Since 2003 a large area of the lagoon (about 50 km2) has been explored through geophysical surveys in super shallow water (less than 1 m) and sedimentological and palaeoenvironmental analyses. This multidisciplinary approach, integrated with archaeological indications and historical cartography, allowed to reconstruct in detail ancient morphologies now disappeared like ancient channels, large areas emerged in roman times and buried salt marshes. The mapping of these buried morphologies indicates different hydrodynamic and geomorphological structure of the lagoon over the centuries. This research was supported technically and financially by the Ministero delle Infrastrutture e Trasporti, Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia.
